Insufficient retirement income is one reason that seniors are becoming homeless. Even when the mortgage is paid off, older adults must pay for utilities, taxes and general maintenance. For example, replacing a hot water heater can be difficult on a fixed income. Some seniors cannot afford rent payments when combined with doctor visits and costs for transportation.

Some working seniors face a similar crisis. They must choose between housing and basic necessities. Some seniors are unemployed or underemployed due to age discrimination, and others do not have the skills or motivation to earn higher wages. While some organizations are trying to make an impact, the waiting list for housing is extensive.
One way that you as an individual can help is to alleviate financial burdens. Using discernment as to who and why you should help doesn’t mean you should become stingy. It means you assess the situation wisely and know who to generously help. There are many ways to help. Buy a monthly gift card for a widow to use at one of the grocery stores. Offer to negotiate and pay for a new roof if you notice she needs one. Pay a utility bill here or there for an elderly couple. Invite a senior citizen to live with you temporarily until he can find permanent shelter. Help him negotiate lower payments or connect him to resources if you have good research and negotiation skills. Help them explore affordable housing options or new home construction to alleviate the problem.
Another way to help is to volunteer or otherwise support existing organizations trying to eradicate homelessness for seniors. Try to become a board member to help an organization have more impact. Volunteer your expertise or labor to help build new housing or transition seniors to existing housing. Give financial support to worthy organizations and ministries already working on this issue.
